The Howard Assembly Room is Opera North’s venue for exhilarating performances of chamber scale work.
The Winter Season at the Howard Assembly Room has a rich programme of performances, exhibitions, film and talks showcasing the wealth of today’s international arts scene.
There is an exploration of darker undercurrents of history; some of the critical fracture points where old worlds end and new ones take shape.
From the birth of the modern technological age in Gilbert and Sullivan's Victorian England through to the end of the Miners' Strike in 1985, a moment which transformed British politics and which still affects many communities.
The Howard Assembly Room Spring Season features everything from evenings of sultry tango, serious Celtic fiddle playing, heartbreaking classical song, mesmerising jazz piano, and the very finest in European Cinema, all together in an unmissable series of performances and participatory events.
The season continues the emphasis on inviting international performers, otherwise not seen in Leeds, to take the stage at the Howard Assembly Room. The venue represents international performance with visitors to Yorkshire from four continents including: America’s sparklingly inventive jazz pianist, Brad Mehldau, Argentinian bandoneon player, Victor Villena, of the Gotan Project playing tango with Tango Siempre, bewitching Icelandic musician, composer and producer, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and santoor music from the hills of Kashmir by Ustad Harjinderpal Singh in a free concert.
The Words and Music series also returns, with different takes on the relationship between the two in film, literature and music.
