Basquiat Strings

Basquiat.jpg Saturday 4 December 2010 7.45pm

“Augmented by Richard Pryce's double bass and the exceptionally subtle drumming of the cult figure Seb Rochford, Ben Davis's group proves that it really is possible for string players to coexist with the spirit of improvisation.” The Sunday Times

Mercury Prize nominated British jazz quintet Basquiat Strings present an intimate show of string-led dark jazz music in this intimate gig, which features the mesmerising drums of Seb Rochford, from leading British experimental jazz band, Polar Bear.

Composer and founder Ben Davis finds inspiration from the raucous, driving Hungarian string groups of Transylvania, the luxuriously rich Brahms sextets and the unruly compositions and workshop arrangements of Charles Mingus. With Emma Smith and Vicky Fifield on violin and Jennymay Logan on viola, the group scored a genre-busting hit with their 2007 debut album and have been going strong ever since.
