Ghosts in the Nursery A unique opportunity to join leading musicians, thinkers and writers as they discuss the secrets and mysteries that lie at the heart of Benjamin Britten’s haunting The Turn of The Screw. Whether you are interested in Henry James’s novella, Britten’s operatic telling of the tale or in the broader mysteries of childhood and the occult, this half-day symposium will bring new perspectives and insightful thinking on the topic. Includes vocal extracts from Britten’s opera.

Part of Opera North’s successful series of collaborations with the Harry Guntripp Psychotherapy Trust.

Speaking at the event:

Bridget Bennett, Professor of American Literature and Culture in the School of English, University of Leeds. Bridget has edited a number of books and has also written two essays, The Damnation of Harold Frederic (1997) and Transatlantic Spiritualism and Nineteenth-Century American Literature (2007), which cemented her long-standing interest in The Turn of the Screw. 

Kate Barrows is a trainee analyst with the British Psychoanalytical Society and works in private practice in Bristol. She is also a Tavistock-trained child psychotherapist and currently works as a staff member of the Child and Family Service at the Bridge Foundation for Psychotherapy and the Arts.

Justin Doyle is assistant conductor on Opera North’s new production of The Turn of the Screw and is accompanied by guest singers from the Company.
