A rare chance to see one of the great Italian films on the big screen. La Strada follows the life of the unworldly Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina), who is sold by her impoverished mother to brutish fairground strongman Zampano (Anthony Quinn). Combining a fairytale quality with the hard-edged realism of desolate towns and an abusive relationship, La Strada follows Gelsomina’s life as the assistant in Zampano’s act.
With an evocative score by Nina Rota and stunning photography by Otello Martelli, La Strada won the first Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1956.
