Roméo et Juliette - Opera North
17 May 2008 - 23 May 2008
17, 20, 23 May at 7.15pm
Charles Gounod (1867)
NEW PRODUCTION
The Montagues and the Capulets are divided by age-old enmity. When Roméo gatecrashes a Capulet party he meets Juliette and they fall deeply, dangerously in love. Amidst escalating violence they are secretly married by the sympathetic Friar Laurent, who hopes that their union may begin to reconcile the feuding families. It does – but only after Roméo and Juliette have paid the ultimate price.
Dramatic, ardent, unfailingly melodic, Gounod takes the world’s best-known love story and makes of it a lavish melodrama. The clashes between the Montagues and Capulets generate tremendous excitement, and for the lovers there is a succession of magnificent duets, jewels set amongst a lushly orchestrated score.
John Fulljames directs two rising young stars in the title roles. Slovenian soprano Bernarda Bobro makes her British debut as Juliette and Leonardo Capalbo, who made a considerable impact with the Company as Paco in La vida breve (2004) and Juan in Arms and the Cow (2006), is her Roméo.
Sung in French with English titles. The performance lasts approximately 3 hours
