Saturday 23 October 2010 8pm
With a pre-screening introduction from author Toby Litt Dir. Jack Clayton, UK, 1961. 100 mins, Cert 12A.
Still intensely atmospheric and scary half a century since it was made; Jack Clayton’s The Innocents is a masterpiece of psychological suspense and ambiguity and is one of Martin Scorcese’s favourite horror movies of all time.
Based on Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, it follows an inexperienced governess (Deborah Kerr) as she comes to isolated Bly House to care for orphans Flora and Miles. Her idyllic arrival and devotion are gradually undermined by terrifying visions and the disturbing behaviour of the children. Clayton expertly builds tension with images of decadent beauty; rotting white roses and the fleeting shadows that inhabit the gardens of Bly House, suggesting a troubling underbelly of secrets and corruption.
Introduced by acclaimed writer and BBC Radio 3 regular Toby Litt, author of two collections of stories and several novels including Ghost Story, loosely based on The Turn of the Screw.
