“A masterpiece” New York Times
Taken from the stories Italian director Ermanno Olmi's grandmother told him, The Tree of Wooden Clogs is a powerful depiction of rural life in the late 19th Century in northern Italy. The story of a little boy who breaks his wooden clog on his long walk to school sits at the centre of a portrait of a community living on the edge of poverty. As his father searches for a way of mending the clog, the dependence of the poor on the powerful and the hard fight to make a living from the land are brought to life.
With its ravishing depiction of the changing seasons and its intense human sympathies, this award-winning film is one of the great neglected works of world cinema and won the Palme D'or at Cannes in 1978..
